Observing a manual reader (think aloud process: reading)

Observing a writer (think aloud): Anouk. Think aloud, computer registration (using input log; see http://webh01.ua.ac.be/mleijten/inputlog; free software for research use) and film/screen capture (camtasia: see http://www.techsmith.com, 30 days free trial version). (a) Anouk's Writing task (writing in English as a foreign language);(b) film of process and thinking aloud; (c) writing protocol, with rough codes; (d) replay with inputlog (you must have downloaded inputlog software); (e) analyses (rough statistics) from inputlog (e1): pause analysis (excel); (e2) statistics (excel); general (e3) linear text, idem with five seconds interval; (e4) resulting text; (f) coding scheme (main categories); (g) film (mpg). All 'Anouk' materials are presented by courtesy of Daphne van Weijen, PhD candidate Utrecht University (dec 2006).

Observing computer use; filmclip/screen captures from a researcher doing a factor analysis in SPSS. Made with Camtasia. Can be replayed with regular media player.

Observing a classroom teacher French (UK) (wmv format). Groupwork: design criteria for effective foreign language teaching (beginners level), and apply this set to the first ten minutes. Material collected in Lingua alive! team, copy created by courtesy of Judith Janssen, Graduate School of Teaching and Learning, Universiteit van Amsterdam

Observing motivation: time on task (wmv format). Groupwork: design a scheme for time on task observation. Design a random time sampling scheme, with interobserver reliability checks (rating at some moment same student). Apply this set and this design to the first twenty minutes of a classroom using IT. Material collected in Lingua alive! team, copy created by courtesy of Judith Janssen, Graduate School of Teaching and Learning, Universiteit van Amsterdam

Observing a revision process in writing (avi format).(What you see is a process as it is played back with inputlog software). Material by courtesy of Mariet Raedts, PhD candidate Antwerp University

Materials used in tasks/exercises Day 1: Assessing Reading skill. Experimental design. Texts.

Day 2: Validity check of items and variables: the Pintrich instrument game. Materials
