Guide for reviewers

Accept an invitation to review a paper
If you received an e-mail invitation to review a paper for L1, please complete the following steps:

1. Go to the L1 review system.
   
2. Login as a 'reviewer' with your username and password. You can choose this role from the drop-down menu.
   Now you will have access to your reviewer's screen, and you can view the paper (click on "View")
3. Click the 'accept' (or 'decline') button to reply to the invitation.

Prepare a review
The L1 review form consists of two parts:

1. general review criteria: closed form with check boxes
2. strengths and weaknesses: open fields
   - comments to authors (to be transmitted to authors)
   - comments to editors (to be read by editors only; confidential)

We advice you to prepare your comments off-line and paste the two text in the fields (see submit below). You can also attach additional files to your review (e.g. revisions in the Word manuscript or comments, or the downloaded review form filled in).

You can also download the review form as a Word document to prepare your review off-line.

Submit a review
When your review is ready, you can submit your review as follows:

1. Go to the L1 review system.
2. Login as a 'reviewer' with your username and password. You can choose this role from the drop-down menu.
   Now you will have access to the reviewer's screen.
3. Click the 'submit' button to access the online review form.
4. Complete the closed form and paste paste your comments into the open fields.
5. Click 'OK' to send your review to the editor.

Register as a L1 reviewer
If you would like to volunteer as a reviewer for L1, you should identify yourself as available for the reviewing tasks.

1. Go to the L1 publication server.
2. Login as a 'guest' with your username and password.
   If you do not have a login code, you should first register as a new user.
3. Go to 'my account'.
4. Mark your availability as a reviewer by checking the 'yes' button next to the question: 'Available as reviewer' (located on the fifth line).
5. Add your affiliation (located on the fourth line)
6. Click 'OK' to save your preference.
